I have come to a massive conclusion. Sweet iced tea is an art. I used to think most people could make good tea, but now I honestly believe that sweet iced tea is a masterpiece if well made. There is such a difference between places you drink tea. You wonder how they all can miss the mark so easily. McAlister’s has good tea. Bush’s chicken has good tea. I make great sweet iced tea. I brew it up a gallon at a time. No reason to brew a quart when a gallon will do, and the more tea I brew the more people drink.
Now I know the British drink tea hot, which is fine I guess if I lived there but I live deep in the heart of Texas. We drink it plenty sweet and plenty cold. The reason I think my family prefers my tea over other teas is I brew it strong. When you think about it you really need strong tea, we fill our glasses to the brim with ice. Then we pour the steaming hot tea over the ice and watch it crackle. The steam dissipates (yes I do know fancy vocabulary!) and all that remains is the smooth flavor of good iced tea. My family firmly prefers Lipton’s. We don’t like the cold brew either, we like those big gallon packets ready to pop into a coffee pot. It is very important to have a cleanly washed coffee pot, to bring out the smoothness of the tea.
With one gallon of tea, I use two cups of sugar. I know it is a lot of sugar. I have tried other sweeteners with no approval. There is always some kind of wang (wang- southern term for odd bite on the end of a drink or bite of food). If no wang than there is a side effect, like with Splenda you get foam on top of your tea. I know there are reports that sugar is the enemy my contention is that sugar is a natural plant product. It is a ground product, so unless you are a diabetic my family will use sugar. Sugar substitutes have many side effects that are unhealthy any way.
Which brings me to which type of sugar we use, and yes that is important. Don’t go there with me, Dr. Pepper from Dublin, Texas does not taste like the Dr. Pepper from Dallas, TX. The difference is the sweetener. If you really want to bring out good flavored tea, use pure cane sugar, not beet sugar. Pure cane sugar comes from a plant called Sugar Cane. Beet sugar comes from processing a beet. I have found an article from San Francisco Chronicle here. Just so, you don’t think I am uninformed. We always make tea with cane sugar preferably using Imperial Pure Cane Sugar. It is grown in Sugarland, Texas. Personally, I think Imperial has the best sugar in the land. It is the Neiman’s of sugar!
The next time someone is hot and thirsty in your house make them a perfect glass of tea, now you know how to! I promise they will relax and be glad you did. As always, Lipton and Imperial Sugar did not pay me to write this, I will not turn down any coupons or products though if they come my way! My goal is for you to be a great southern host with a glass of tea to envy over.

The taste can also depend on the water which is obviously different in each bottling plant. I used to do quality control shopping for Pepsi products and this was one of the things they looked for. Different bottling plants have different water.
When we moved to north Florida it was the first time I had ever been asked if I wanted sweet tea. I said yes, and really, really liked it. I do agree with Jean, it is the water that makes the difference too. We have good water where I live here in WA state, but they must have used bottled water in FL because the tap water down there was just plain nasty. :)
Water plays a huge part in how good the tea tastes as well.
I live in McKinney, TX and our water is the pits. Getting a drink from most places up here is awful... especially sweet tea.
But there definitely is a science to it. And so far, Chick-fil-A has figured out how to make it pretty well. Now I know where I will be going tomorrow for lunch, lol.
We are tea sisters as well! We hot-brew a half-gallon EVERY day, more if we have company, and we use ONLY Lipton tea with real sugar. My ratio is a little lighter than yours, though, I try to hold it down to half a cup:half a gallon, but if I do use more, DH makes sure to comment that "the tea is really good this time!"
jean Absolutely, right now our water tastes good, but it could change depending on the lake level. Sometimes I filter it too, just to get all the gunk out. And I hate Mexican Cola, the water they begin with has to be awful! My boys love Mountain Dew BTW Jean!

If I remember correctly McKinney has really soft water. Chick fil A is pretty good, but if there is a Bush's Chicken you must try it. Warning I have to do an half and half. Half Sweet Half Unsweet, they put in more sugar than I do!
HEB I knew I loved you! my sugar to tea ratio took me years to refine. A mother of one of Dunk's friends that is also Karen cousin used to make tea that Dunk swore came from Heaven above. I finally asked her ratio, she said which is true you have to add lots of sugar to bring out the best flavor of the tea! I have tried Luisanne but my family refuses to drink it~

I hadn't ever noticed a difference in the taste of soft drinks from different places, I will def. think of that from now on, though! :)

Mmmmmmmmmmm, my all time fave is sun tea. Takes away any possibility of it being bitter but gawd it tastes sooooo good. We go through 2 gallons a day here and nothing beats the heat like an ice cold glass of tea. I couldn't agree more about the sugar too, 2 cups of Imperial is a must.
As for Dublin Dr. Pepper......that i'll have to get. I live over near Huntsville and i know there's somewhere here that has it but i can't remember where. Guess i'll have to look harder.
Oh Nessa let me tell you, now you can even buy Dublin Dr. Pepper in the store. It is the can with 10,6 and 2 on it. I think I live closer to you than I thought!
I'm British and yes, good hot, strong tea, with a little milk - no sugar ;O)
Did you know that when you are hot, drinking a hot drink cools you better than a cold drink? Something to do with internal temperature or something.

I knew would want milk and sugar! My sezwho is a pain, I may remove it entirely! A tech helped me but not sure if I like it or not! I am too much of a rebel to allow a program to dominate my blog! I may use haloscan, it seems to work with blogger better.
OMY gosh.... I thought tea was tea and sugar was sugar.... I think I have edumacated! None of the beet stuff in Four Oaks anymore! Just the cane stuff! Liptons it is.

Tocco you know coffee I know sweet tea! With my coffee I tend to like the sugar in the raw if I am out and about, something about the taste of it! But never with tea do I put anything but pure cane sugar!

I love southern sweet tea! I grew up in Texas, but my parents would not allow us to add sugar to our tea, so I was always looking for an excuse to eat at my friends' house. :)
Nowday, we make a gallon of sun tea everyday (weather permitting) and add the sugar while it is still warm, then it is placed in the fridge. There are days that we can go through 2-3 gallons a day between us all.
