Madmen and Edith Head

I love good TV. By that, I mean I love TV that has a plot, some drama, and some comedy. Something I can bite into as a more than a nibble. My taste in television over the years has been varied, I admit to having taste like few others. I love a real good reality show like Project Runway, and a great comedy like Psych.

Over my lifetime, I have been obsessed with the oldies, just not happy to be in the current year. Edith Head was my hero in television, outside of her it was Bob Mackie. I love a sharp dressed character with a plot to boot. I remember turning on the Sonny and Cher Show to watch Cher’s clothes, then I would have to watch the Carol Burnett Show for the comedy and the costumes.

When I heard a show was set in 1960, I knew I would be glued to the tube. I had hoped it would have sixties costumes that I liked, since I was alive then I tend to be a bit critical. Well Madmen did not disappoint, they were the right girdles and bras. Few productions get the correct bras; Edith Head was a genius at exact duplicates with flair. Even she would like Madmen, I remember on my tour to Universal Studio other people were excited about the jaws part. I only wanted to see Edith’s studio, I had dreamed of it many times. Madmen more than the costumes unlike the Sonny and Cher Show does have a plot. It has characters to hate and love, sometimes they are the same person.

If you want to know where I was on Sunday, the answer is simple about 12:30 I saw there was a marathon on, the kids were lucky to be fed. Since Madmen is on AMC there aren’t many breaks. As I watched most of last season, I realized how many episodes I missed. I would see parts of a episode but never the full show. Now that I have watched most of it, my feelings for the show have not declined. I admit there is a lot of sexual behavior in that is very unethical, but it does follow a plot that makes sense. Today as I thought about it, Peggy only had one affair, as did Pete. They love to hate each other, and yet they actually bring out the best in each other.

Sterling is totally without repent, and he is the cad we all know. Don is truly as bad as Sterling but in denial of being one. Still I know as awful as the behavior is the story is one that pulls me in, the want to be better. The want to make more money, it is a story that told well is riveting.

Stumble It!

I remember watching a scandalous amount of TV in the 80's, less in the 90's, and very little now. My favorite 80's TV shows were Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, LA Law, Cheers and The Simpsons. I can't believe how much time I used to have on my hands back then. I was a big movie hound back then too, so many hours spent watching a flickering screen. Well, I suppose it kept me out of trouble, more or less. Since we don't have cable out here on the farm, and I refuse to buy a satellite dish, and there is so little that is fit for my kids to watch, we mostly leave the TV turned off these days. Don't miss it much.

Heb I agree there is not much to watch. I do love Psych, it is witty and refreshing. Madmen is a mix of great movies and good TV. There is stuff in it I would not let my kids see though. We did have a long time without a dish, but Hubby has thought and thought, his love for westerns and History channel is too great for him to disconnect it. Although he contemplated doing it.

Nessa,
If you ever start it is hard to stop. We own a lot of series DVDs for that reason. Fraiser is my favorite all time show. Every episode still stands up. Nessa Dish we have Direct TV is so expensive, it is a cost that Hubby has to decide the fate of. If we didn't I would just buy the Series DVD!
