Lowfat Caffe Latte

Every Bar has a secret, every Starbucks has a huge steamer that forces hot air into milk which creates a foam. You can take soy milk, or non fat lactose free milk(yes I do) and turn it into a foamy cream that you will honestly enjoy. So buy your Great Value Coffee at Walmart for less than 7.00, then buy an Aerolatte for about $20.00. Voila you have endless fancy coffee for a fraction of the cost of any Starbucks or gourmet coffee shop, it does a great lowfat milk shake as well. I bought my Aerolatte on Sunday, it was my birthday gift to me. I should have wrapped for Hubby, because I will  no longer be longing for fancy coffee I cannot afford.

Here is a video of how it works.

Honey’s Beef Stew

I am giving Honey the credit for this stew. Grandpa still loves to buy meat, and double packages were on special last week.  He told me the general rule is one will be tender and one will be tough. His suggestion was to cook one as a roast and one as a stew, especially if the roast is very tender. Cooking of the other one as stew meat would assure it to be tender as possible.

Don’t tell Grandpa he is as brilliant as he is! The last time he gave me two roasts I cooked both as roasts and one was tough as leather! I know I will confess to Grandpa he called it correctly. What you do is trim the beef into bite size pieces, I make enough to save for lunches for a few days so I cook it all but you could make two or three stews out of it.

  • Roast you have trimmed and cut into bite size pieces
  • 1 Tbsp of Tone’s beef base (whatever brand you find)
  • 1/4 cup of flour
  • Salt, pepper and seasoned salt to taste
  • 1 lb or more of carrots
  • 2 big potatoes or whatever you have
  • 1 onion
  • celery if you have it (I didn’t)
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 6oz can of tomato paste
  • a can of tomatoes or diced tomatoes (if you have it)
  • can of peas (if you have it, I did)

The ingredient list is not as important as how you cook the meat, the technique is what makes the beef tender. I know I sound like a know it all but remember I spent my childhood wanting and craving good beef stew, now that I can make it I know what went wrong all those years. You need a great pot, cast iron works best because it can maintain the temperature. Take a little bit of olive oil and place it in the pot. Meanwhile take the trimmed, cut up beef and toss it in the flour with salt, pepper and seasoned salt. Then you put the meat in the pot that is fully flour coated. This will allow the meat to brown, but not fully cook. It will only take a few minutes of you turning and tossing until all sides are brown but not burned or fully cooked.

Once it is browned, put in two cups of water, beef base  and cover. Cut up the vegatables, but don’t worry about the tomato paste or peas. Toss in the pot all at once (another very important step) all the veggies, and salt, pepper and seasoned salt to taste. Let it come back up to bubbling, Then about two hours from serving put in the tomato paste. Right before serving put in the can of peas. The diced tomatoes can be put in whenever you like.

This stew should cook 5-6 hours in total on very low heat for the entire time except when you are browning your meat.

This stew will be tender and flavorful, but the flavor is centered around slow cooked beef.

Oh I know you are welcome, once I tried it this way I knew I had to share with you the easiness of this recipe!

Reality Blogging

I am still working on my glass ware. Who knew that old stickers would be so hard to remove? I am using a bucket with hot soapy water to soak the last few stickers. I have cleaned them all up. I have redone three of the containers.

Speaking of glass, Hubby found a glass cleaner that is in a can. It was really cheap at Sam’s so he had to try it. Hubby loves to try new cleaners, which is why I never buy them he usually will buy them when I wouldn’t. It does do a great job on glass and mirrors, other stuff not so much.

I had hoped I was one of those bloggers who could take one thing and in 24 hours turn it around. When I get them all done and loaded I will redo a slide show, at least that is my plan. I had Goo Gone, but I am out of it. It is not cheap, but hot water and soap work works well. It just takes a lot of time and patience.

Now I know with my best efforts I will not make a 24 turnaround. I marvel at some bloggers, their house is never messy, it is wonderful decorated and their kids are perfect. You are not here because of any of those reasons! If you have all of the above, I am thrilled for you, but my kids, house and dirt are real life. Knowing who you are is just refreshing, even when I was frustrated yesterday. Knowing that my glassware is normal, cheap stuff I have to redo with soap and water I was thankful. The reason is simple, life is not easy, nobody has a breeze of a life. We may not know their struggles but everyone has struggles.

It was not me that came up with the soap by the way, it was Hubby. That is the way his mom and grandmother did it years ago. As we shopped the other day, and he saw the cleaner my dad used to use the type of cleaner when he sold glass and mirrors. Everything old is new again.

Today when you want to think defeat rejoice in who you are. Everything I have been through has been a lesson learned, God teaches us over and over until we learn. The less we fight the lesson the more we learn. You are who you are for a reason, and that reason is yours to rejoice in.

Glass Bargain Finds

I am a garage sale person. Hubby is an addict. While I was shopping potential goats which I would not buy he was garage sale hunting, when he finds a good one I get to go. This was an estate sale. What you are seeing I got for $10, plus some more “junk” hubby bought. This stuff will be used immediately. The copper jello molds were a part of my childhood. As we changed homes the main thing I would see is the molds in the kitchen. Anyway I thought I would buy some to keep me grounded to my childhood. This glass measuring cup I have wanted for years, if only I can keep from breaking it or keep the boys from breaking it. The glass containers I found all over the little house, some were dirty some were clean. I plan on using them for storage in the bathroom. I love glass in the bathrooms!

Market Change

Hubby came home one day from work all excited. He said Walmart had a new brand we had to try. I asked what the name was, he said it was called Great Value. Funny since Great Value has been around for years at Walmart.

Lo and Behold I entered Walmart last night for a few staples. There in the center aisle was a plain white label marked sugar called Great Value. The pretty blue package was gone, the price seemed about the same as the pretty blue Great Value pure cane sugar I buy. Interesting choice of marketing by Walmart, I have yet to try the new packaged sugar but my guess is the sugar is just the same.

I went to the coffee aisle just to check on the coffee I have been drinking for the last five years I know. It is Great Value Arabica Coffee with a red label. Sure enough no red label, only a white label with the Arabica kind of coffee. While I am sure Walmart is convinced this will sell more, buying the white label with the blue lid seemed wrong. I kept looking back to make sure my red label was gone! It was the same price, after this long I know exactly how much my coffee is.

If you haven’t tried Great Value, many products taste great if not better than more expensive brands. My coffee is the best I can find, smooth yet strong. Some of the products are not exactly great but the price makes trying them worth the time!

Just so you know I am not crazy, I took a picture of the coffee!

Update 10/26/09 This is indeed the same exact coffee. Trust me I would know, I bring my own coffee to every place I vacation.

Lemon Pepper DIY

I am a spice girl. I love spices, and nothing is better on chicken than Lemon Pepper. K had told me to quit buying cookbooks and start going to the library. That way the few recipes you really want you get, and you give back the book. You come out recipe rich and money rich.

I found this book called The Perfect Mix by Diane Phillips. She has many mixes for all those gifts in a jar. I took one of her basic bean recipes and tweaked it for Sconicle and I.  We still have quite a few chickens left in the freezer, and I have been hungry for Lemon Pepper.

Here is her recipe.

  • 1 cup ground black pepper
  • 1/3 cup dried lemon peel
  • 3 tablespoons coriander seeds
  • 1/4 cup dried minced onions
  • 1/2 cup dried thyme leaves

What you need to know is she does mixes that makes a bunch. This recipe makes 2 cups, you could easily back off the proportions and get a smaller batch.

I have not tried this but it looks like that would be the flavors, any rate I like the cost of this versus buying Lemon Pepper.

As a side note I have used the lowfat popcorn twice, delicious!

College Textbooks

Dunk has yet to buy his books, but we as a family have looked up pricing.

There are several Frugal options. Let’s face it no matter what you buy the student will never recover the costs of the books back. Any cheap way to get the book you are better off.

One of the books Dunk is getting is a Politics Book, at the college store he could buy it for $143 new, $107 used. He can rent it for $87, or there are downloadable versions. The versions are nothing that I would like. I want a textbook you can download by a pdf, page by page. With our laser black and white printer it would be the best price with the most benefits. As of yet I have not found that version. Some of the downloads are based on buying a ebook reader, which is another cost that would push up overall costs.

So here is what I found.

The place you may find a textbook free or cheap HERE

Chegg is a rental book place. Look HERE.

Downloadable Books link is HERE

As much as I read about free textbooks at these sites, I found none. Tucker Carlson is doing a special on textbooks, I am hoping he will have links that will help me. Regardless this weekend we have to “commit to the books”

Electricity Results

My experiment on lowering our electricity bills is over. The results are not impressive. The main reason I would love it to be great is because regardless we have to pay the stinking bill.

What I saved in kilowatts just by being a Watt watchdog. Here is a link to exactly what I did in order to cut the usage down. Look HERE.

I saved exactly 52 kilowatts in the same 31 day period with an average difference of 1 degree lower in temperature.

I would love to tell you that is a great thing, but the problem is that is not nearly enough for me to celebrate. It comes out to a $8.00 lower bill.

What I have found out about Texas electricity(Texas is different) is that because my Hubby works during the night and day our electric bill will always be higher. Anytime you use daytime energy in Texas you pay, which really bugs me. If the house was a business it would be an expense, but the house is a home and there is nothing to take off of taxes or anyway to fix it.

I had heard about the certain oddities of usage from churches. Churches because they are a nonprofit are paying sky rocketing bills because of their use in the morning hours of Sunday. They cannot get around the “demand rate”.

From my layperson understanding the “demand rate” is because there is a demand during the day to run electricity, if you use it during those peak times you are going to pay more no matter what.

My kilowatt usage for July 2008 was 700 kilowatts less. Which to me is intriguing. The average temperature was 6 degrees less than this month.

The reality of looking at our bill and our ability to pay these high numbers is not fun. I don’t have an answer yet, I wish I did.

Hard to spend money on Energy Star appliances when you can barely pay the electricity bill.

Electricity Experiment

We had the highest energy bill ever in the history of my life last month. This month it has been a struggle to pay any bill because of the amount of that bill. I called Reliant, and not much could be done. We were in the lowest rate available unless we went to average billing which would not work because in winter we have gas bills.

Therefore I decided to try and figure out realistic more cutbacks on the energy drain from our house.  After thinking long and hard I did come up with some ways to use less energy. I have been “guilty” in the past of doing small loads of washing clothes. I have allowed phone chargers to be plugged in for too long. I have let my kitchen appliances like coffee maker, food processor and can opener stay plugged in. But no more! I am a rabid dog on a hunt for anything plugged in not being used. The moment my coffee is brewed it is unplugged. I only wash a full load, drying out on the line has been a struggle. But I am trying to do it when I can. A front loading washing machine frankly holds more clothes than my line can hold. But I do use it for blankets, jeans, comforters and anything else that can fit.

Here is an article about Vampire Appliances. While it doesn’t say the kitchen things I am doing it just to see if it makes any difference in my kilometer usage.

I am only focusing on kilometer usage not dollar amount because I want to know exactly how much I save.

As soon as I get my bill I will post about it. If I can save 200 it is worth it!

Time and Money Savers

During the kids show week I always learn something! My budget is normally blown, and this year it was blown but not as bad as I usually do it.

We need to have crock pot meals, and casseroles already cooked. That is the plan for next year. We would come home tired and hungry, with no time to cook.  If I had nine meals ready that would be perfect, perhaps even nine bags of frozen chicken breasts that I can grill! Anything would have helped. What I realize every year is by the time I need it, it is too late. While it is our show week that throws me off, it may be some other obstacle for you.

What we do each year with show time is take notes. This will go into the notes I have. How many days on Turkey starter will be coupled with make some casseroles.

I needed meat already bought that I could dump in the crock pot. The nights we ate whatever found it was so much easier.

I finally figured out a new type of money saver. Pretend you are broke! Yes I know it seems strange. When we sold the pig equipment, we cashed the check. During show week we lived on cash only. But this was extra cash, so our bank account didn’t feel the hits of over spending. It was money we didn’t normally earn, but when you are out of the house 9-12 hours a day as a family you will spend money!

After show week, I am left with a dirty house, a bank account not hit, and plans for next year. Also we have the thirty chickens left we have to process, this weekend should be fun! That and the fact the boys both made the sale, it was a great week as the commercial says priceless.

I am finally rested, so the deep clean up will begin today.
